WE NEED THE PATIENT NEARBY when making a call to our office for an emergency appointment. We will attempt to alleviate the issue over the phone which will save a trip to the office for a care call. It is easier for the patient to explain what has happened or for parents or the school nurse to look in the mouth and describe what seems to be causing the pain.
LOOSE WIRE Don't be alarmed if a wire comes loose. This happens occasionally. If wire protrudes and is irritating, use a blunt instrument (back of spoon or the eraser end of a pencil) and carefully, gently push the irritating wire to where you cannot feel it. Simply get it out of the way. If irritation to the lips or mouth continues, place wax or wet cotton on the wire to reduce the annoyance. Call our office for an appointment to check and repair the appliances. If any piece comes off, save it and bring it with you to the office.
LOOSE BAND If the band around the tooth comes loose then push it back on the tooth and call us. If you cannot replace it then take it off. The remaining wire may poke, place wax or wet cotton on it and give us a call.
LOOSE BRACKET If the bracket is between two attached brackets, then it may move around, but it is not a critical emergency. If the bracket is at the end of the wire, then slip it off and give us a call. The wire may poke your cheek at that point.
EMERGENCY CARE As a general rule, an emergency appointment may be made when there is severe pain, a loose band, a broken wire or something sticking out that you can't take care of. It's important to know the names of the parts of your appliances. It will help, when you phone the office, to be able to identify what part is broken or out of place.
